Released on vinyl in 2012 on Top Shelf Records in the US while also on CD in Japan on StiffSlack records. The angular and mathematical approach of pswingset's music called for an equally angular and calculated layout. The layout for each package features the same color palette used in alternating ways. By alternating some key elements the two pieces can standout from each other while also work together as equal parts of a whole.
A Split 7" to mark the occasion of the Pswingset / Play Dead Season Japan tour in 2013. The packaging features a photo I took here in Austin in a parking garage downtown. The gritty texture and cluttered metal struts seemed to be fitting image for the music contained within. I attempted where possible to employ an 'equal and opposite' design approach. This is the work of two different bands put out by two different record labels so I felt it needed balance and contrast all at once. The cassette version of this work was produced in 2014 on the meat cube label.
'Disappear' EP was released on Count Your Lucky Stars records in the U.S. and Strictly no Capital Letters in the UK on beautiful vinyl, as well as in Japan on Stiffslack records as an expanded CD-EP. Creating a packaging system that is at once the same but functionally different is always a fun design challenge, especially in this case as this body of work was released in three different countries spanning two different audio formats. Each piece has it's own detail elements, but also work great together. Original art and design was completed in 2015.
This record was released in 2015 on the UK based label Dog Knights Productions but features the brilliant work of two of Japan's best hardcore bands. Tokyo's Blue Friend and Nagoya's KMKMS.
Papermoons - NO LOVE LP
Released on CD and Vinyl LP in February of 2014, this lush and beautifully lonely record was a joy to design. The cover photo is a random shot I managed to grab while at Muir Beach overlook in California with my wife years ago when I turned 30. The bird seemed determined yet infinitely alone here at the edge of America with the eternal expanse of the Pacific Ocean behind her. The sun was just about to set, such that it was at it's most intense and created a nearly perfect silhouette. With this design I wanted to tell a story of emptiness, wide open spaces, loneliness and joy.
SLAVEDRIVER is a Japanese post-hardcore band. The goal was to create album art which stood in direct contrast to their music. I wanted to represent order and thought, where their music is chaotic and random. The intentionality of creating chaotic and seemingly random art can be order in itself. These illustrations are inspired by European Brutalist architectural structures from the 1950-60's. The illustration on the cover is based off of a supermarket located in western France.
Slavedriver / Threadyarn 7" EP
This record was packaged using a recycled chipboard jacket, and screen printed on both sides using back and light grey inks. The total visual composition is the sum of both the grey and black shapes, colliding with each other and eventually joining here and there to create one visual composition. Much like this record is the work of two bands, combining their art into a single body of work. It's always important to me, to represent the intent of a body of music with it's packaging. The way we present ourselves to the world says everything about who we feel that we are on the inside. Packaging is exactly this, it needs to perfectly represent the intend of a body of work.
The Harvest Thieves - EP
I was very honored to work on this for my good buddies here in Austin, TX. Their song " escape from the paper city" is about leaving Dallas, TX. So the design features wonderful vintage photography of Dallas in 1950's, paired with a layout echoing the aesthetic of many country and jazz singles of the era. Designed in two colors and then screen printed in Minneapolis by the very talented Erik Hamline. See the poster I designed for their record release show here.
